Some of my earliest memories involve the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. Pirate mini-golf, the cave train, pennies being thrown into glass chalices. When I was 10, we went on our first trip to Disneyland. I ran to the shop across from the Indiana Jones Ride and handed my mother a life-size rubber skull. She was a little concerned and almost didn't buy it for me. However, what she saw as a morbid souvenir, I saw as my next movie prop, or a display for my shelf; my own piece of adventure straight out of my favorite films.
My love for adventure lead me to pursue photography. I married my best friend in 2019 and we traveled from the tallest peak in the lower 48, to some of the most remote islands of the Marquesas. I couldn't wait to continue this momentum and see the world. Unfortunately, 2020 had other plans. Quarantine fatigue hit fast and I grew restless. I woke up one day with the urge to make something with my hands. Inspired by the art I saw in French Polynesia, I grabbed some air-dry clay and started sculpting a tiki mug. The community was overflowing with encouragement and tips from the likes of VanTiki, Coxswain Dunsel, TikiPop, William Wallace, TikiRob and many others.
In Polynesia, a small island is called a motu. A mikey is, well, me! And thus, Motu Mikey was born! I started my first mug "Da U'u" in 2020 and finished in 2021. My next mug Bonehead, released in 2022, was a mesh of multiple inspirations. Following a short break and a re-centering, I decided to do something big for my third limited edition mug. A collaboration with a master Marquesan woodcarver, Tangy Taupotini. My third mug "Tiki Kaipeka" released in 2024. Follow me on instagram for updates on our tiki stuff! @motumikey
